Aphasia Group Activity - Visual Recipes

In this group activity, individuals send postcards to addresses around the world and receive postcards in return. The group discusses postcard content with each other. Use this activity to expand vocabulary, to support verbal or written skills, and to have a great time!

Description

  • Read through the entire recipe, starting with the cooking tools (discuss what you will use them for)
  • Read through ingredients
  • Read recipe
  • Create recipe (optional)
  • Answer questions about recipe (WH-, sequence...)
 Resources/Materials Needed
  • If the recipe will be made, all grocery items and cooking tools will need to be brought in.

  • If the recipe will be made, all of the tools listed on the recipe will be needed and the grocery items will need to be purchased. Depending on the facility, some things may need to be prepped at home and brought in.

Adaptation Details
  • Specific words and phrases can be targeted for accuracy depending on their goals. It can be catered to the individual and their interests. The recipe can be adapted to various reading levels, WH- questions, sequencing, etc.

Other Adaptation Details
  • This recipe can be used in many different ways! Grocery lists can be created, discussions of variations to the recipe, choral reading of recipe, etc.

  • It is helpful to find videos of the recipe or something similar. This is a great way to prime them for the activity and generate discussion on similarities and differences between the recipes. It can be a great way to integrate the family into activities at home.
